Vijayawada is the headquarters of Vijayawada (urban) mandal in Krishna District. Bezwada was the headquarters of the taluk in the Kistna District of Madras Presidency during the British period. It was the eastern end of the Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway(NGSR) and an important railway junction with the rest of India, connecting with the Bezwada-Madras Railway section of the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway(M&SMR).
