Kolar District Railway

Kolar District Railway was a 2ft 6in/762mm narrow gauge(NG) from Bowringpet to Chik-Ballapur], a length of 63½ miles(102km). The line opened in from [[Bowringpet| to Kolar in 1915 and to Chik-Ballapur in 1916 [1].

The first section from Bowringpet to Kolar was originally named the Bowringpet-Kolar Railway, 10½ miles(17km), when it opened in Dec 1913, constructed by the Mysore Durbar and worked by the ‘Mysore State Railway’. It was financed entirely by the District Board of Kolar from the proceeds of a debenture loan [1].

As the District Board were unable to raise the entire capital for the whole of the line from Bowringpet to Chik-Ballapur, the cost was bourne in equal proportions both by the Kolar and Mysore District Board. The 52 mile(84km) extension from Kolar via Chistamani to Chik-Ballapur opened in 1916, giving a total line of 63½ miles(101km) and became the Kolar District Railway worked by the ‘Mysore State Railway’.[1].

Other Developments

Simultaneous to the above the Mysore Durbar was financing and constructing a further 2ft 6in/762mm narrow gauge (NG) extension:-

Much later (after 1937) the ‘Yelahanka-Bowringpet Section’ was created by these two joining NG lines except for the with the first 10 mile(16km) section from Bangalore to Yelahaka. Thus forming the ‘ Yelahaka-Bangarpet Railway’ - see separate page
