This event is part of the Mesopotamia Campaign in the First World War.
Synopsis
A decision was made to secure Amara, a commercial centre on the Tigris 100 miles north of Qurna. The commander in chief, Sir John Nixon, sent a force under General Townshend in a flotilla of boats. Townshend and an advance party of 100 sailors and soldiers convinced the garrison that a larger force was soon to arrive and they surrendered.
