W E Smith & Co Ltd, Madras

The 'W E Smith & Company Ltd' were a Madras based wholesale and manufacturing druggist, opticians, dealer in surgical,dental and vetinary instruments and makers of aerated water [1].

In 1914-15 it is recorded that the Company "for many years has been engaged in the manufacture of various kinds of aerated waters .... the absolute purity of the water used is guaranteed by the 'Berkefield System' of filtration. The water is drawn from the 'Red Hills tank', which is about 10 miles from Madras ...... A small Tramway has been constructed for the conveyance of full bottles to the store-room..." [2]

The Tramway
The short hand-worked Tramway, of unknown gauge for moving full bottles of product from the bottling plant to the storerooms. The tramway was operating at the Kardyl Building on Mount Road, Madras. It was in use in 1904, and still in use in 1914-15. The building is now known as the Bharat Insurance Building [1]
