Registration of births and deaths in Calcutta

Registration of Births and Deaths in the Town. [Calcutta]

The town has been divided, in accordance with Section 94 of Act VI. of 1864 [1863?] B.C., into six Districts, as shown below, and the undermentioned parties appointed Registrars for the aforesaid purposes.

The Registration of Births and Deaths under the abovementioned Section took effect from the 1st of April 1864, and under Section 98 and 99 of Act. VI. of 1863, information of Births must be given within one month next after the day of every such birth; and of Deaths within eight days next after the day of such death. Any person whose duty it shall be to give such information, and who shall refuse or neglect to do so, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding one hundred rupees.

1st District - Is bounded on the North by the northern Boundary of the Town, which extends from the junction of the old Chitpore Nullah, with the end of the Upper Circular Road to a point called Permit Ghat, where the mouth of the above Nulllah meets the River Hooghly.
On the South by a line running from East to West across Hulsee Bagan Road, Hoogul Kuria Lane, Brindabun Bose’s Lane, Doorga Churn Mullick’s Street, Neemoo Gosain’s Lane, Aheereetollah Street.
On the East by Circular Road.
On the West by the River.

2nd District - Is bounded on the North by the southern boundary line of the first district.
On the South by a line running across Muchooa Bazar Road, Cotton Street and Meerbuhur Ghât Street.
On the East by part of Upper Circular Road.
On the West by the River.

3rd District - Is bounded on the North by the line forming the southern boundary of the second district.
On the South by Baitakhana, Bow Bazar, and Loll Bazar Streets, Fort William College and Fairlie Place.
On the East by Circular Road.
On the West by the River.

Residence-Potuldanga, Bhobanychurn Dutt’s Lane, near the Presidency College.

4th District - Is bounded on the North by the southern boundary line of the third district.
On the South by Jaun Bazar Street, and by the Road across the Maidan to Baboo’s Ghât.
On the East by Lower Circular Road.
On the West by that part of the River included between Old Fort Ghât and Baboo’s Ghât.

5th District - Is bounded on the North by the southern boundary of the fourth district, and on the East and South by Lower Circular Road, town side.
On the West by that part of the Road on the plain called Old Course, joining the road leading from the Hospital Gate to General Hospital, including the Great Jail.

6th District - Embraces the remainder of the Plain, Cooly Bazar, Fort William, the River from Permit Ghât, North to the South-west corner of the Tolly’s Nullah, and extends to the West side of the River to low watermark. The Howrah, Ramkistopore, and Sulkea Ghâts will be excepted, according to the Proclamation issued by the Governor-General in Council on the 10th of September 1794, fixing the limits and boundaries of the Town of Calcutta.
