Stringer Lawrence with Robert Clive set out from Fort St David for Trichinopoly on 28 March. He managed to evade the French forces under Jacques Law and entered Trichi on 8 April. Law retreated onto the island of Srirangam with Chanda Sahib where they was surrounded by hostile forces. A relief force from Pondicherry under M. d'Auteuil was turned back by Captain Dalton at Ootatoor about 21 April.
