The Purulia Ranchi Light Railway was a narrow gauge branch of the Bengal-Nagpur Railway - later South Eastern Railway. The section of the railway extended to 73 miles (117 km). Previous to this Ranchi had been about 70 miles from a station.
The line was extended to Lohardaga - about 44 miles(70km ) west of Ranchi in 1913.
The track was converted to broad gauge in January 2004.
