The On 14 April 1951, '''Southern Railway''' became the first zone of Indian Railways (IR), formed on 14 April 1951 from the merger of the [[Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway|Madras and Southern Mahratta]], the [[South Indian Railway|South Indian]] and the [[Mysore State Railway|Mysore State Railways]].
In 1966, parts of SR were combined with portions of [[Central Railway]] to form the ninth zone of IR, [[South Central Railway]].
