Chronology

  • 1802 raised as 2nd Btn Marine Regiment
  • 1803 becames 2nd Btn 20th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1824 2nd Battalion became 40th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry under Major Murray
  • 1857 mutinied at Dinapore on 25 July. Marched to Arrah where they took part in the siege

In 1861 after the mutiny the title was given to the Shahjahanpur Levy which later became 40th Regiment of Punjab Infantry.
