Sir William Nott GCB (1782-1845), joined the Indian Army as a cadet in the Bengal European Regiment in 1798. He commanded the 2nd brigade, 1st Division of the Army of the Indus in the 1st Afghan War and later was appointed commander of all troops in Lower Afghanistan. He served as Resident at Lucknow and returned to Britain in 1844.
