- 1857 raised as 31st Regiment of Punjab Infantry in Ferozepore and known as Bloomfield's Sikhs
- 1861 became 31st Bengal Native Infantry
- 1864 became 31st (Punjab) Bengal Native Infantry
- 1885 became 31st (Punjab) Bengal Infantry
- 1901 became 31st Punjab Infantry
- 1903 became 31st Punjabis
- 1922 became 2nd Battalion 16th Punjab Regiment
- 1947 allocated to Pakistan on Partition
