12th Frontier Force Regiment was formed in 1922. It consisted of five regular battalions; numbered 1 to 5 and the 10th (Training) Battalion. During the Second World War further battalions were raised
- 1st Battalion: see 1st Regiment of Sikh Infantry, Punjab Frontier Force. Known as the 51st Sikhs
- 2nd Battalion: see 2nd Regiment of Sikh Infantry, Punjab Frontier Force. Known as the 52nd Sikhs
- 3rd Battalion: see 3rd Regiment of Sikh Infantry, Punjab Frontier Force. Known as the 53rd Sikhs
- 4th Battalion: see 4th Regiment of Sikh Infantry, Punjab Frontier Force. Known as the 54th Sikhs
- 5th Battalion: see Corps of Guides, Punjab Frontier Force

At Independence in 1947, the 12th Frontier Force Regiment was allocated to Pakistan and in 1956 became the Frontier Force Regiment, which also had other regiments amalgamated into it, with Regimental Depot now at Abbottabad.[3]
