== Synopsis ==
The naval engagement took place on 10 August when the French were forced to retire to [[Pondicherry]]. '''Sir Edward Vernon ''' came up to Pondicherry on 21 August but contrary winds prevented the fleets from engaging. '''M. Tronjolly ''' sailed for [[Mauritius ]] during the night leaving the British blockading the town.
General Munro arrived at Pondicherry on 8 August but was not in a position to bombard the town until 18 September. In the middle of October the garrison surrendered.
