'''Major General Sir Henry Tombs VC KCB (1825–1874)''' was a soldier of the [[East India Company]] who was born in Calcutta and joined the Bengal Artillery in 1841. He was renowned for his bravery and leadership. He served in the Gwalior Campaign 1843, the [[1st Sikh War|Sutlej Campaign]] 1845-46 and the [[2nd Sikh War|Punjab Campaign]]. He commanded a troop of horse artillery during the [[Indian Mutiny]] and won the VC at the [[Siege of Delhi 1857 - Idgah Battery|Siege of Delhi]]. He commanded the Bhutan Field Force in the [[Duar War]]1865. Ill health forced his retiremant to England in 1874 where he died at the early age of 49.
