Chronology

  • 1802 raised as 2nd Btn 20th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry following 1796 reorganisation when previous 20th became 2nd Btn 6th Regt
  • 1824 2nd Battalion became 40th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry under Major Murray
  • 1857 mutinied at Dinapore on 25 July. Marched to Arrah where they took part in the siege

In 1861 after the mutiny the title was given to the Shahjahanpur Levy which later became 40th Regiment of Punjab Infantry.
