- 1878 raised as the Khyber Jezailchis by Capt Gilbert Gaisford[1]
- 1881 command taken by Sardar Mohammad Aslam Khan (first Muslim commander)
- 1887 renamed Khyber Rifles
- 1919 disbanded
- 1946 reconstituted from Afridi veterans
- 1947 allocated to Pakistan
