Cossipore, to the north of Calcutta, was the location of the East India Company's gun foundry.
In 1801 a Gun Carriage Agency at Cossipore, (presently known as Gun & Shell Factory, Cossipore) was eatablished and production started from 18th March, 1802. This is the first Industrial establishment of an Ordnance Factory which has continued in existence until the present time.
