Military history

Battle of Cuttack 1803

John Beames, Collector

John Beames (Wikipedia) served as Collector of Cuttack from 1875 to 1878 and earlier as Collector of Balasore district from 1869 to 1873. He wrote Memoirs of a Bengal Civilian, which describes his work "defending powerless peasants against rapacious planters, improvising fifteen-gun salutes for visiting dignitaries, and presiding over the blissful coast of Orissa". This book may be read online on the Digital Library of India website.
