== Summary ==
Spain came into the Seven Years War against Britain in 1762. Colonel William Draper promoted a plan to Parliament to attack Manila. The British Government persuaded the [[East India Company]] to back the campaign on the promise of increased trade. The fleet set sail from [[Madras]] on 1 August 1762 and although Manila was successfully stormed, the British could not maintain a hold on the Philippines in the face of local resistance. The colony was restored to Spain under the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Paris_(1763) Treaty of Paris]though fighting continued until news reached the East Indies. The British withdrew from Manila but illegally continued to occupy a base on the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulu Sulu islands] until 1773.
