The '''Purulia Ranchi Light Railway''' was a 2ft 6in/762mm narrow gauge([[Rail_gauge#Narrow_Gauge|NG]]) branch of the [[Bengal-Nagpur Railway]] - later [[South Eastern Railway]]. It was opened by Sir Andrew Fraser, Lieutenant Governor of Bengal on 14th November 1907 <ref> "Bihar District Gazetteer" Volume 16 </ref>.
The first section of the railway from [[Purulia]] to [[Ranchi]], a line length of 73 miles(117 km). Previous to this [[Ranchi]] had been about 70 miles from a station.
