Monthly Army List
==''Monthly Army List''==
''Monthly Army List'' was an '''official ''' War Office publication, which commenced August 1881 under this title and ceased after May 1940. (No issues published for Dec. 1897 and Jan. 1898).
Based on library catalogues, Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, and the National Library of Scotland may have the best collections. The British Library holds a broken range of editions from October 1881 (UIN: BLL01013821218), and another holding at the BL as part of IOR/L/MIL/1/79-1536, the latter to July 1940. The National Archives also holds Monthly Lists which are part of the Library collection<ref>David_Underdown. [https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/228278-army-list-copies-at-kew/?do=findComment&comment=2273267 Army List - copies at Kew?] ''Great War Forum'' 13 June 2015. Retrieved 9 June 2018.</ref>, however the date range is unclear. The [[National Army Museum]] appears to hold a limited number of editions before and after the WW1 period. Some libraries may hold editions on microfiche. As an example, the National Library of Australia holds two editions of ''The Army List'' on microfiche published by M M Publications Lidgate, [England]
For at least some war periods a Confidential or "Security Edition" was also published with known editions August 1939 (available online) and September 1939, and it seems possible that ''Monthly List''s may have been continued after May 1940, to 1943, solely on a Confidential basis.<ref>From a comment in the British Library catalogue UIN: BLL01001094682 .</ref>
Note the ''Monthly Army List'' was a '''continuation ''' of earlier monthly publications. A private Monthly Army List appeared between 1798 and 1808, succeeded in January 1809 by the monthly publication '''''The Army List''''' published with official sanction, which was made an official publication in 1854. ''The Army List'' is available at the British Library with given date range 1809-1881. UIN: BLL01013821246 . There is also another holding at the BL as part of IOR/L/MIL/1/79-1536, from January 1817.
Quarterly indexes (Jan, Apr, Oct) appeared from April 1868 to October 1873, replaced by monthly indexes from February 1874, and a separate quarterly Retired List with its own index appeared from October 1881 to October 1897. Between May 1915 and April 1917 a separate monthly supplement of promotions, appointments and casualties was issued, becoming quarterly from July 1917 to April 1920. A separate half-yearly (Jun, Dec) supplement of the Reserve and Territorial Forces, rewards, undisposed balances etc. was issued between December 1923 and December 1938.<ref>Catalogue entry [https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/a58afb63-f05c-43d0-9802-8216773aa567 British Army: Monthly Army List OR/L/MIL/1/79-1536] discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk</ref>
Monthly Army Lists contain a great deal of information, including details of '''location''' of regiments and the Royal Artillery, both under individual regiments, but also in a section "Commands of the Army", where the information is listed geographically (example for [https://archive.org/details/monthly-army-list-1927-sep/page/n63/mode/2up 1927 September] (Archive.org), commencing page 18), for both UK and overseas Commands, including for India, generally listed under East Indies, which may also include Burma and Aden. Ceylon is listed under Dominions, Colonies and Protectorates etc. This information is generally '''not''' available during war time and perhaps some other periods, including editions in early years, which also lack Contents pages.

*Google Books editions. Elsewhere it has been stated there is an almost complete range of online editions for the period August 1920 to December 1936, (missing December 1928, Jan.-Feb. 1936) but the following are those which have been located. Note, many of the digital files contain two, or sometimes three volumes, the second/third volume is followed by the letters sdf meaning same digital file. Most of the volumes are from Stanford University, with many from Oxford University from 1815 including 1881-1885, and some from New York Public Library NYPL. For some periods it may be possible to locate two different digital copies. '''Some files are badly scanned, some to the extent of being unreadable''', so Searching may to be unsuccessful. Generally there is a Table of Contents near the front of each print volume, and an Index of Names at the back of each print volume (although for some years the Index is at the front of the volume).
:'''There may be additional digital files which have not been located by the Google Search to date'''.
:'''Some of the following Google Books links may not be permanent, particularly for 2nd or 3rd-12th books in one digital file'''. For this reason, and for a book reader which many consider easier to use, you may wish to access the digital book files in the following '''collection on the Internet Archive''', Archive.org
