hello i'm a new member but have spent loads of time on ancestry , the geneaologist and various other sites trying to find my gt grandfather's birth and parental details. He was MATTHEW HENRY RANSOM born 1840/6 (as stated in a newspaper article from new zealand 1907 on one of his sailing visits there as captain of a ship) in calcutta and shipped to england for his education at 6 then going to sea at 16 on atlantic vessels. I've got details of his captaincy of the Essex, northern monarch and terawhiti. his family residences with wife and 4 children...but cannot find any registration of his birth in uk or on line with fibis. I am unable to travel to any of the research centres but would be very obliged if anyone has any details which may throw some light on his history. Was he the son born to Shearman Ransom 2 dec 1840?? if not then does anyone know who this was, as it's the only register that seems to fit with the other details I have for him. Is anyone else researching the ransom family's Indian history and if so please contact me annecleveswatchet@gmx.com
