- 1798 formed as 16th Regiment of Bengal Infantry
- 1845 became 16th Bengal Native Infantry
- 1857 disarmed at Meean Meer. Regiment of Lucknow formed of loyal troops from other regiments
- 1861 became 16th Bengal Native Infantry
- 1864 became 16th (The Lucknow Regiment) Bengal Native Infantry
- 1897 became 16th (The Lucknow Regiment) Bengal Infantry
- 1901 became 16th (Lucknow) Rajput Infantry
- 1903 became 16th Rajputs (The Lucknow Regiment)
- 1922 became 2nd Battalion 7th Rajput Regiment
- 1947 allocated to India on Partition and renamed the Rajput Regiment
