Deccan Horse
By the treaty of 1801 the Nizam of Hyderabad was obliged to maintain a military force called the Nizam's Contingent. The subsequent treaty of 1853 renamed the force the Hyderabad Contingent. During the 19th century the names of the units changed from 1st and 2nd Regiment Nizam’s Cavalry to 1st and 2nd Cavalry Hyderabad Contingent and 1st and 2nd Lancers Hyderabad Contingent.
Chronology
- 1790 raised as Asif Sah's Irregular Cavalry under the Colours of the Nizam of Hyderabad in Berar
- 1801 became the Nizam's Contingent
- 1816 Irregular Cavalry reorganised into four regiments of the ‘Reformed Horse’
- 1853 became the Hyderabad Contingent
- 1903 became the 20th Deccan Horse and 29th Lancers (Deccan Horse)
- 1922 amalgamated to become the Royal Deccan Horse (9th Horse)
- 1947 allocated to India on Partition
- 1950 became The Deccan Horse (9 Horse)
