During the British period Tanjore was conquered by the Marathas. The East India Company intervened in a succession struggle during the 2nd Carnatic War and in 1799 Raja Serfoji ceded absolute sovereignty to the Company after falling into arrears with the Nawab of Arcot an ally of the British.
