This image appears on Richard Pillinger’s website Major Roland Pillinger: A Soldier of the British Empire. Major Pillinger joined the Tenth Royal (Prince of Wales Own) Hussars in Canterbury in 1879 and served until 1913 rising “ by sheer force of character from Private to Major and Quarter-Master”

Richard Pilllinger has generously given permission for FIBIS to display the image which appears to be an ink drawing from a memorial book, of a Memorial to the Soldiers of the Regiment lost in the Afghan Campaign in 1878-9. Below the base there are the words "R.C.ROMANEL TENTH HUSSARS ". One Officer and 46 NCOs and men were drowned crossing the Cabul River and a further 38 men died of cholera on the way back to Rawal Pindi, when an outbreak set upon the Regiment in the Khyber Pass.
