The first troop of cavalry in the Madras Presidency was raised in 1748 but regular establishment did not take place until 1784. Until 1788 seniority of regiments changed according to the age of the commanding officer so the regimental number changed. By 1804 there were 8 regiments of Madras Native Cavalry - which from about 1818 were designated Madras Light Cavalry. The Madras Cavalry was not affected by the Indian Mutiny and the regiments lasted until independence in 1947.

The Java Hussars was raised in 1812 for operation in Java, commanded by Captain L H O'Brien of the Madras Cavalry and disbanded in 1816. See Historical books online below.
