• 1861 became 23rd Bengal Native Infantry
• 1864 became 23rd (Punjab) Bengal Native Infantry (Pioneers)
• 1885 became 23rd (Punjab) Bengal Infantry (Pioneers)
• 1901 became 23rd Punjab Pioneers
• 1903 became 23rd Sikh Pioneers
• 1922 became 1st Battalion 3rd Sikh Pioneers
• 1929 became Corps of Sikh Pioneers
• 1933 disbanded
• 1941 re-raised as The Sikh Light Infantry
• 1947 allocated to India on Partition

• Letters of forgotten VC winner found. 27 February 2008 The Telegraph. Retrieved 23 August 2014. Brevet Captain Robert Shebbeare won his medal during the infamous siege of Delhi in September 1857. Afterwards he put together a Sikh regiment, the 15th Punjab, which later saw action in China. Includes photograph with officers of his 15th Punjab regiment, "taken by Mr Beato in the British camp at Talien Hwan, Manchuria, on either 10 or 11 July 1860".
