Ranchi was the headquarters of Ranchi District in the Chota Nagpur Division of the Bengal during the British period.

During the Second World War, Ranchi became an important Army and Royal Air Force base. It was the Headquarters for the Chindit campaign in Burma (for details see Second World War), and wounded were treated at Ranchi.

  • Ranchi War Cemetery contains graves from the Second World War, when Ranchi became an important base. The cemetery was begun on 1 June 1942 by the army, and used until the end of the war. Afterwards graves from isolated positions and small inaccessible cemeteries were brought in, and in 1952, more than 200 graves were transferred to the cemetery from twelve civil cemeteries. CWGC
