- 1784 raised as the 2nd Madras Native Cavalry
- 1786 disbanded following a mutiny and raised again from other loyal elements
- 1788 became the 3rd Madras Native Cavalry due to changed seniority
- 1819 became the 3rd Madras Light Cavalry
