Umballa is now known as Ambala and is a large town in the Punjab. The Umballa Cantonment was established in the year 1843 after the British abandoned its cantonment at Kurnaul, following the malaria epidemic of 1841-42. The cantonment church is called St Paul's and it has a large graveyard and war memorial.
