A zone of Indian Railways (IR), formed on 14 April 1952 from the merger of the Bengal-Nagpur Railway and the East Indian Railway(EIR) with the exception of the latter's 'Moradabad, Lucknow & Ellahabad Division' which was transferred to the Northern Railway.

Bifurcation

The amalgamation of the two large rail systems did not prove successful and on 1 August 1955 the zone was split to create the revised ‘Eastern Railway’ based on the old EIR with the 'South Eastern Railway' formed essentially from the old Bengal-Nagpur Railway with slight adjustments within Adra District.
