The city was an important junction on the main line of the [[East Indian Railway]] from [[Calcutta]] to [[Delhi]]; from here, a branch ran south-west to [[Jubbulpore]] to connect to the [[Great Indian Peninsula Railway]]'s main line from [[Bombay]].
