Ancestors in British India often followed the profession of '''Apothecary''' (title changed in 1894 to '''Assistant Surgeon''') and it is hoped that this article will help you to track yours down and learn more about how they lived and worked.

==Quick definition==
Initially, under the East India Company, this was a junior medical orderly. Later, in the Indian Army, the title advanced to today's senior nurse. In 1894, the rank was abolished in the Indian Subordinate Medical Service in favour of that of Assistant Surgeon.
