LaterHowever, in the Indian Armyas apothecaries had surgical training, a junior doctor is probably the best description. The title advanced to the equivalent of today's senior nursechanged in 1894. In 1894, the rank was abolished Assistant Surgeons in the Indian Subordinate Army were recognised as fully qualified medical men and were registered as medical practitioners under the Medical Service in favour of that of Assistant SurgeonAct.
