A field force under Sir Robert Sale encountered Dost Mohammed in the Parvan Valley. Two squadrons of the [[2nd Bengal Light Cavalry]] were ordered to charge but broke leaving their officers to advance alone. Lieutenants Broadfoot and Crispin were cut to pieces and the political officer Dr Lord was shot and then stabbed. Captains Fraser and Ponsonby escaped severely wounded.
