== Synopsis ==
After the French captured [[Fort St George]] from the British the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nawab_of_the_Carnatic Nawab of the Carnatic] expected the town to be handed over to him as overlord. When his forces approached the walls however the garrison's gunnery compelled them to retire. [[Joseph-Francois Dupleix |Dupleix]] sent a relief force from [[Pondicherry]] which met Mahuz Khan's army at the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adyar_(River) Adyar River]. The bold attack by the French drove the enemy into the town from whence they were then expelled and forced to retreat towards [[Arcot]]. By this action the French ceased being suppliants to the local ruler.
