On 11 April 1858 General Sir Edward Lugard advancing from Lucknow encountered a rebel force at the village of Tigra - 17 miles NNW of [[Jaunpur]]. The rebels were defeated and Lugard then continued on to relieve [[Azamgarh]]<ref>
