Originally part of the Calcutta and South Eastern Railway, a private Company that was taken into Government ownershgip in 1868.
The broad gauge(BG) line was constructed in 1862-63 to handle traffic from the opening of Port Canning as an auxiliary harbour to Calcutta, but the failure of Port Canning involved the railway in its ruin.
