Branch line Originally part of the [[Calcutta and South Eastern Bengal Railway(qv)]], a private Company that was taken into Government ownershgip in 1868.
Opened The line was constructed in 1862-63to handle traffic from the opening of [[Port Canning]] as an auxiliary harbour to [[Calcutta]], but the failure of Port Canning involved the railway in its ruin.
