The French arrived in 1673. It Chandernagore became Bengal’s a larger trading centre - bigger than neighbouring [[Calcutta]]. Its importance fell after being taken by the British. Colonel Robert Clive of Brittish the British [[East India Company Limited ]] and Admiral Watson captured Chandannagar Chandernagore in the [[Battle of Chandernagore 1757]] . Control was returned to the French in 1816 , where it remianed remained until independanceindependence.
