There was a proposal to provide a through route to Eastern Bengal by upgrading the [[Eastern Bengal Railway]](EBR) ‘[[Goalundo Branch Railway]]', crossing the Ganges River by Steamer and constructing a railway from Aricha, on the eastern bank of the Ganges to [[Dacca]].

the '[[Goalundo-Narayanganj Extension Railway Survey]]' had been undertaken by the [[Eastern Bengal Railway]](EBR) during the period 1894-98. The record states “the object of connecting Calcutta with the Assam-Bengal Railway”. The line was not constructed and is a previous failure to provide a connection to East Bengal
