The Howrah-Burdwan Chord Railway was part of East Indian Railway(EIR) system. The line broad gauge(BG) opened in 1917 and provided shorter link to Burdwan from the EIR hub at Howrah. Prior to the opening of the Howrah-Burdwan chord the only line was the Sheoraphuli-Tarakeshwar Railway which had been constructed in 1885.
