The author was a member of the Civil Service in Burma from 1912, and his autobiography covers the years 1928-1931, particularly his role as District Magistrate of Rangoon, and the riots of 1930.

The author was Philip Mason who joined the Indian Civil Service in 1928, and his books are about members of the Indian Civil Service.
