Includes '''Borneo'''. Indonesia was formerly known as the Dutch East Indies, and was generally under Dutch control. However the East India Company had some involvement as [[Bencoolen]] on the southside of the island of Sumatra, was occupied by the East India Company from 1685 to 1825, when it was exchanged with the Dutch for Malacca which was more strategically useful.  In 1811, the island of Java was captured by the Madras Army of the East india Company, see [[Java Expedition]] and Sir Stamford Raffles was appointed as the island's Governor. In 1814, Java was returned to the Dutch under the terms of the Treaty of Paris.
