As many as 50 percent of soldiers recruited to the East India Company's Armies were born in Ireland. In many cases, the places of origin that they reported to the authorities were 'Townlands', i.e. sub-divisions of parishes. This information is not totally helpful, since many townlands were identically named, even within a single county.
To browse a list of townlands of Ireland, together with alternative possibilities for the parish and county in which it is located , see Irish Townlands Category
We are grateful to Leslie Rogers for the compilation of this most useful list.
