'''General Sir James Abbott KCB (1807-1896)''' was an officer of the British [[East India Company]] who went to India in 1823 to join the [[Bengal Artillery]]. He served in the [[1st Afghan War]] in the artillery and then undertook a journey to Khiva to negotiate for the release of Russian prisoners. He was a protege of [[Henry Lawrence]] and served in the [[North West Frontier Province|Northwest Frontier]]. He was Deputy Commissioner of the [[Punjab]] after the [[2nd Sikh War]] and commanded a column in the [[Black Mountain Expedition 1852-53]]. He founded the town of [[Abbottabad]]. He returned to England and died on the Isle of Wight.
