'''Karnal''' was the headquarters of [http://dsal.uchicago.edu/reference/gazetteer/pager.html?volume=15&objectid=DS405.1.I34_V15_054.gif Karnal District] in the Delhi Division of [[Punjab|Punjab Province]] during the British period. About 125km north of [[Delhi]], it had a military cantonment which was abandoned in 1841 due to a massive spread of malaria caused by faulty irrigation. Following this, the cantonment at [[Umballa]] about 85 km away (north) was built in 1843 as a replacement.
