Originally raised from the Madras Volunteer Guards on 1st January 1879 and became the 2nd (Madras) Group Garrison Artillery on 1st April 1917. Constituted as II. (Madras) Field Brigade "The Duke's Own" on the 1st October 1920, after HRH The Duke of Connaught visited India to inaugurate the "Montfort" reforms in the Indian Government. Reorganised in 1933 and became No. 3 (Madras Field Battery "The Dukes Own".
