== Summary ==
HMS Pearl was a 21-gun screw corvette of the Royal Navy launched in 1855. During a voyage under Captain Edward Sotheby which took her round the world she was in action in the [[2nd China War]]. At Hong Kong Pearl was ordered to [[Calcutta]] to assist the British forces opposing the Indian Mutiny. Sotheby formed 175 of the ship's crew into Pearl's Naval Brigade in September 1857. The small force, armed largely with rifles, took part in several actions. It was accompanied in many of these by a similar force formed from the crew of HMS Shannon.
